ABEL® Oxidative Stress Kits with Pholasin®:
- Cell Activation Test Kits
- Antioxidant Test Kits
Knight Scientific Limited (KSL) produces a range of unique oxidative stress test kits for measuring free radicals and other non-radical reactive oxygen containing species and for determining the antioxidant potency of raw materials, ingredients and finished products. The highly reproducible relative antioxidant capacity scores (ABEL-RAC™) can be used on labels of finished products, in formation development, quality control and quality assurance.
KSL also offers a confidential contract testing service. The choice is yours: contract testing for you or in-house testing by you, the choice is yours.
Please contact KSL to discuss your requirements or for technical information and advice.
ABEL® Cell Activation Kits with PHOLASIN®

These chemiluminescent test kits contain the unique photoprotein Pholasin® which emits light in the presence of free radicals and certain oxidants. The antioxidant capacity of the sample under test is expressed as the percentage reduction of peak luminescence of Pholasin® (and/or the delay in time in which the peak luminescence is observed) during the course of the test in the presence and absence of the sample. The results can be expressed against other antioxidant standards or as ABEL-RAC™ (relatively antioxidant capacity) scores per mg or material being tested.
Samples of serum or plasma of people and other animals are expressed as TAC (total antioxidant capacity) scores against a set of antioxidant standards of known concentration. These ABEL-TAC™ scores have known distribution ranges.
It is now possible to measure the antioxidant activity in a sample of blood taken from a mere finger prick to determine the TAC of individuals and classify their scores. These precise measurements make people aware of their antioxidant status, providing reassurance or enabling them to take steps to remedy a low value.

ABEL® Antioxidant Test Kits for Tube and Microplate Luminometers
- ABEL® 21 series:
Antioxidant Test for superoxide and other free radicals is excellent at screening for antioxidants such as ascorbic acid.
- ABEL® 31 series:
Antioxidant Test for halogenated oxidants such as hypochlorous acid, produced naturally by some white blood cells, assesses antioxidants such as albumin. It is excellent for testing materials that are dissolved in organic solvents.
- ABEL® 41 series:
Antioxidant Test using peroxynitrite is a total antioxidant capacity (TAC) test because peroxynitrite attacks virtually any substance that has antioxidant properties and can screen for both water and lipid soluble antioxidants.
- ABEL® 51 series:
Antioxidant Test for hydroxyl radical is an excellent assay for assessing antioxidants in a variety of materials including plants.
- ABEL® 61 series:
Antioxidant Test with enzyme generated superoxide produced in the xanthine/xanthine oxidase reaction, excellent for quantifying superoxide and for measuring the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and SOD mimetics. It is possible with this assay to distinguish between quenchers of superoxide such as Vitamin C and SOD mimetics.
