Oxidative Stress

An active neutrophil

KSL has for many years been actively involved in oxidative stress research, both fundamental and applied. This is a rapidly advancing field which embraces research applications in:

  • over 150 free radical mediated diseases, including cancer, diabetes and heart disease
  • inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohns disease, ulcerative colitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • neurodegenerative diseases
  • sports medicine including horses
  • biocompatibility of materials and medical devices
  • and monitoring the well-being of individuals by measuring their antioxidant status, that is the capacity of their body’s antioxidants to neutralize excess free radicals (and other reactive ad potentially damaging species)
