ABEL® Antioxidant Research Kits

Principles of the kit:


The kit contains the unique protein Pholasin® that emits light in the presence of free radicals such as superoxide, produced using reagents included in the kit. Antioxidants in the sample which compete with Pholasin® for free radicals, thereby reducing the light emission. The antioxidant capacity of the sample tested is expressed as the percentage reduction in peak light emission compared with controls or in ascorbaic acid equivalent units. In the test a bolus of free radicals is produced. This particular assay is very good at identifying pro-oxidants.




Advantages:


• Excellent reproducibility. • Easy-to-use. • Specific for particular types of free radical or oxidant. • Short assay time and can be easily automated. • Non-hazardous reagents.




Applications:


A chemiluminescent test for measuring the capacity of a sample of fluid such as water, plasma, serum, synovial fluid, food and food ingredients, cosmetics etc to scavenge free radicals such as the superoxide anion.




A note about number of tests:


The pack size for the tube / cuvette format kits is shown as a range (e.g. 40-80 tests, 80-160 tests). The number of tests that can be performed with a kit is determined by the luminometer used. Instruments that require a 1ml sample volume will only allow the smaller number of tests, whilst those instruments with a sample size of 0.5ml will allow the higher number of tests to be performed.

The kits are sold in either cuvette/tube luminometer formats of microplate format.

A. 1 x bottle special antioxidant Pholasin® for 25 tests. Store at -20ºC; after reconstitution at 5mL, do not freeze, store at +4ºC. B. 1 x 50ml Reconstitution and Assay Buffer. Store at -20ºC. C. 1 x 25ml Solution A. Store at room temperature. (Can be stored frozen - solution A crystallises but the crystals redissolve on warming) D. 1 x 10ml Solution B. E. 2 x bottles L-Ascorbic acid (reconstitute to 5ml). Store at -20ºC, discard after use.
